Then this is no fairy tale - this is Appleby-in-Westmorland, Cumbria, England. The town is well known for its historic buildings and compact location within a loop of the river Eden. By any standards it is small having a population of only 2,500 but this is increased in summer with visitors to the town and surrounding countryside. The main street is "Boroughgate" which runs from the town centre and market square to "Appleby Castle" which overlooks the town. A short street "Bridge Street" connects the town with the bridge over the river Eden and the newer part of the town known as "The Sands". From "The Sands" the town extends to "Bongate", once a separate village but now part of the town. "Doomgate" and "Chapel Street" run parallel with "Boroughgate" and are connected to it by "High Wiend" and "Low Wiend", narrow streets with many historic buildings. Annual events in the town include the Gipsy Horse Fair when travellers from across Europe congregate in an encampment on the edge of town to trade horses also the Jazz Festival arranged late in the summer.
